Are you at risk of Macular Degeneration?

At The Spectacle Place we genuinely care for your eye health and this is why we believe it’s important to talk about Macular Degeneration. It’s the leading cause of blindness and major vision loss in Australia according to the MD Foundation and it has Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1965) in main view. Your macular  – the central part of the retina – is responsible for your clear and concise vision. Macular Degeneration causes progressive damage to your macular resulting in loss of your central vision (while your peripheral vision remains fine). There’s no cure for this condition, but there are treatments available if diagnosed correctly.

Symptoms may include difficulty with fine vision, distortion where straight lines appear bent, recognising faces becomes difficult, dark or empty patches appear in the centre of your vision.

Our Optometrists can identify Macular Degeneration during a standard Eye Test. We then refer you to an Opthamologist who can discuss specialised treatment options.

The key to this is to get tested regularly – we suggest yearly – to maintain a healthy lifestyle (that includes no smoking), and always provide sun protection for your eyes.

If you would like to know more about this condition or ready to book an eye test, we’d be happy to hear from you.
